What is Addiction?

The National Institute on Drug Abuse describes addiction as a “disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences.” The addictive substance might be an illegal drug, a prescription drug, or inhalant. • False reporting of symptoms to get an increase in a prescription medication.
  • Withdrawal symptoms after discontinuing use.

Causes of Addiction

  • Childhood or family issues such as neglect, traumatic events, an unstable family environment, and/or physical, sexual or emotional abuse.
  • Family history of addiction and substance abuse.
  • Mental health issues such as eating disorders, bipolar, and schizophrenia.
